I used to hate gilded pages because they seemed extravagant, but then I dropped ice cream on the edge of the pages of my Baronius Press Douay-Rheims Bible and it wiped right off. It does have its uses.

They're the stupidest and ugliest thing ever. I've got a few books where only the top is gilded

Yeah it's gold not because it's fancy because it's the only metal flexible enough (that also won't oxidize and flake off after a few years, like silver)
I miss /tradcath/ general... now I know how the Jews felt after WW2 (except they could go to the USA or the newly minted Israel while I can go only to /x/ where schizos are constantly spamming... or /pol/...)

Gold over red is nice. I hate it when it's cheap because pages tend to stick together, especially if it's a lightweight paper.

Personally I think "sprinkled" edges look the coolest, but lack any protective value.

I have a Plato's complete works with gilded edges, I like to read it while puffing on my cigar and listening to Bach (on vinyl, butler flips the record over when each side finishes) and drinking goldschläger at the same time.

The top of the book page block is the area most likely yo collect dust.
Guilding just the top makes it way easier to wipe off the collected dust.
I will say I prefer guilding all the edges though.
