HardSF niggers writing a novel set in the 90's
>Wife: "What's wrong with the TV? This cathode-ray tube technology sure is amazing but unreliable."
>Husband: "Sure is. I'll go to the store and fix it. Give me a minute to warm the internal combustion engine on my car. Glad we don't need to use horses or anything like the primitives in (other story relevant place)"

At least they tried to rebel in 1984
In the real world people actively accept the censorship of corporations

In real life I actually speak as if I were in a poorly written historical novel.
>"It sure is nice to be outside where the air is breathable and you don't get radiation burns, because, y'know, this is the time before World War Three happened."

I always describe technology in its most recognizable and textured form.
Time period doesn't matter. I'm not writing a period piece. I may not specify the television is a cathode-ray type, but describe its warm glow, the drone as it runs. Radio? Big box with all kinds of knobs and dials. Phone? Describe the sound of shutting the lid, the tactile feel of the little buttons. Computers are big and chunky, sometimes taking up whole rooms. And cables. Thick messes and bundles of cables strewn across the room, a microcosm of the spider's woven pattern strung across the power lines that sprawl the city, the electricity buzzes like so many flies, struggling to break loose.
