Reading good literature is for people of good character, not the mentally ill.

Preface this in your mind with some trite about mental illness revealing the true madness of what we consider sane, or something. I think picrel - though in a basal, sex-addicted way - is onto something. Aren't most books simply a repository of the experiences that allowed the author to come up with a book worth writing? At what point does the consumption turn to production? What good character do you have that you can't do anything with philosophy, theology, history and so on?

What's up with people who hate reading and this "2 pages of describing trees" meme? I've never read a book that did this, not even Tolkien spent whole 2 pages describing trees.

I thought it was going to be Walden, which I know only by reputation, but glancing through it, it seems that the first chapter is not about trees but shopping lists.

Reading is something to be done for leisure. You must have a passion for knowledge, A want to expand your mind, or simply a desire to experience a story. If you pick up a book, you should be picking it up on the basis of being interested in it, not simply so you can say you've read it to impress other retards on the internet. If you go into literature with that mindset of a to-do list, no shit, you're going to hate it and hate yourself. Don't be a fucking consumer drone.

I don't know why I'm responding to this thread it's fucking AIDS.
