That's a good one. Even though it's not my absolute favorite it's the one I always recommend to people first just because it's such a perfect example of how WEIRD this things can be compared to the normal perception

People's idea of Conan is largely formed by the Schwarzenegger movie, followed by the comic. The books being written by Lovecraft's penpal just doesn't fit into that framework at all.

I liked the one where he broke into a rich guys house to steal a vase stolen from the Stygians. There was a huge snake with a manโ€™s head inside and Conan just takes one look at it and sprints out of the country.

I wouldn't. People who like fantasy these days like authors like Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss. I'd recommend Conan to people who think they don't like fantasy because of all the Tolkien concepts that, by now, have been gobbled up and regurgitated by five or six authors before it arrived on a modern-day page. To people who hate Marvel films and the nerdy-webcomic style of quips and dialogue. People who think, rightly or wrongly, that the world mysteriously got neutered at some point in the last couple of decades. Read Conan if you like stories about cowboys and Indians, stories about buried treasure, stories about historical wars.

True, big fan of Jewels of Gwahlur myself.

Most of them are dogshit, few people could write pulp action as well as Howard. Like Jeffrey Jones' art though.

Have you read Valley of the Worm? Not Conan but kickass story about the origin of the dragon slayer myth, being Aryans migrating out of Hyperborea and killing a Lovecraft god of the jungle.

If you like Conan, you should all read Kull. Heโ€™s another creation of Howard. Also a barbarian, but more contemplative. Thereโ€™s one story where the villain just tricks him into wasting his time staring into a magical mirror, thinking about the nature of reality so Kulls friend has to come in and smash the mirror and tell him to get off his ass.

>Silent-film cinephile wishes death on fans of Ghost in the Shell because he thinks the medium should only be expressed in the way he prefers.
>Believes non-fiction is superior to fiction because he thinks events of a narrative must occur in the real world in order to reflect the human experience.
Why the conceit? Nonfiction does not possess a monopoly on expressing beauty, suffering, excitement, or joy; neither does utilitarian belief exclusively determine the value of art.

Go read Joyce and talk about modernism in another thread if you're so inclined.
