The funniest part is that having read both they're not even so different in writing quality, George benefits from being a native English speaker and is going for a more epic scope which adds to the world building. But in terms of plot, mythology, and characters Sapkowski and George are basically two DnD nerds who got lucky.

That's because you're not Polish. The saga isn't very good but it was the only Polish fantasy series we had and so it influenced an entire generation of geeks and nerds who went on to become programmers during the early 00s coding boom. The first game was developed by a small team of dedicated enthusiasts and it's objectively the best one even though it's pure Slav yank aka Slav SOVL and it hasn't been ported to any console. It wasn't a big hit but it received some awards and gained a cult following big enough to build up the hype for a sequel. This time around it was pandering to Western audiences and actually closer in spirit to ASOIAF than Witcher but the combat was objectively much better and it was ported to major consoles so it sold much better than the first one. Real hype began with the E3 2013 announcement of Witcher 3 and the rest is pretty much history even though I don't like the third installment nearly as much as the previous two and it underdelivered in several departments.

The Witcher 1 is kino but I found the second one to be an absolute chore. Never completed it. The third one would be great if it wasn't for the main story playing off the most uninteresting aspect of the books. The DLC was great though.
