I've heard of Germans reading Hegel in English instead of German because the translators did so much work in transmitting his thoughts.

I've also seen a German anon on another board laughing at how incomprehensible he found Nietzsche's Zarathustra.

It's the case for pretty much all best selling authors. When a hack makes his way to fame in the United States, their editor then sells translation rights to various publishers abroad, who in turn give the book to their own translators, and the finest ones available, given it's been expensive and forecast to be a commercial success. And that's how some guy who translated Steinbeck or Melville got tasked with translating Eragon or Mistborn.

This is true, at least for Revelation and maybe some other parts of the NT. Translations make Revelation sound grand and imperious when the Greek is almost unreadably bad in some places.

I've talked to multiple russians who prefer to read dostoevsky in english because it sounds more "sophisticated", but they were all progressive lib russians so idk what "real" russians think
