Within the story it's about how the monster is a transcendent cosmic entity that is neither alive nor dead as human beings understand the terms. Within Lovecraft's worldview it's about how he's deeply unsettled by the fact that one day humanity, the Earth, and even the universe will disappear. When everything is dead, there will be no more death. Read The Crawling Chaos and Til A' the Seas.
