So this whole time you guys were full of shit about the whole "trad publishing is dead" thing.
What the hell?
You guys said it would be impossible but all I did was submit my work a couple of times over a year and then send my work out to small publishers that published stuff comparable to mine.
That's it.
That is all I did.
Do you guys even submit your work?
Are you all just the writer equivalent of an incel where you complain about not having a gf but haven't talked to a girl in ten years?
And before a bunch of submissioncels get upset and post a bunch of proof that the publishing industry is a mess; I am not debating that.
The difficulty has probably provably gone up but that isn't the point, the point is have you even tried?

OP you are probably right that a lot of guys on /lit/ don't even try. I've been submitting for decades, and at this point I've got probably half a dozen short stories and a dozen poems published. Not a lot, but I'm out there. So yeah, just keep trying, you'll hit it eventually.

Publishing traditionally means the editors (essentially readers with merit) have deemed your work good and fitting for their publication. People will read, say, a magazine for its particular style or niche and because they trust the work to be good, and your work is presented to them as part of that with those qualities promised by the editors. There are standards and a pre-existing, receptive audience (or else the publisher will be making efforts to cultivate one).

I actually would really like that. In theory we could use the Writing General for it, but I notice those guys seem to be hyperfocused on the crafts and troubles of the actual writing process, and not so interested in actually publishing their stuff. A lot of them are big RoyalRoad boosters, too, and, well, RoyalRoad is the sort of thing we'd be wanting to avoid here, yes?

So somebody should make a Submitters General Thread, or something like that.

Being niche is good because it means that the places you submit to will be much more likely to establish a back and forth and WANT you to be accepted even if they reject you at first. Also I have found that it is useful to add in that you would be interested in contributing in other ways in your submission. That way even if you have to rewrite a couple of times before being acceoted you can get your foot in the door writing bout other contributors work

Okay so it looks like THIS is turning into the Submitter Thread, so I'll post this in here. Check this out, guys:

https://firstthings.com/poetryprize/

First Things is a pretty serious intellectual magazine that's very Catholic-heavy but not exclusively so. It bills itself as "America's foremost journal of religion and public life." They're also one of the few venues left that seriously pays for poetry. I got a poem published by them once and they paid me $100, and this was years before inflation.

So they're having a poetry contest. Check the prizes: $2000 for first place, $1000 for second place. Like I said, serious money. Serious judges, too: at least one of them, Dana Gioia, is a fairly formidable poet who has championed the return of form and meter to serious poetry.

Entry deadline is June 30th, so you have until Sunday at midnight to submit. Get cracking, fellow poets.

Good to know, I don't know exactly how niche it is in the grand scheme of things, but it does follow a tight thread between the topic at hand and the backgrounds of the prior thinkers being built upon and related to each other along the way.

>Also I have found that it is useful to add in that you would be interested in contributing in other ways in your submission. That way even if you have to rewrite a couple of times before being acceoted you can get your foot in the door writing bout other contributors work
As in, both editing/expanding my paper as is, while editing and adding to other scholars pieces towards their publication?

I can't speak to the lit publishing world, but I've found that a frankly horrifying amount of things the people write with confidence about on here are based on zero experience. If you're good at something and have decent willpower, you should absolutely pursue whatever that is if you want to. Do not listen to people here about what is dying or what is worth it or what is possible.
