I can't take this kind of thinking seriously. Additional material resources can open up the choice of adversity. With resources, people can build their own businesses, explore their passion projects, learn skills, etc. People, by and large, strive for a goal, for status, for betterment, so even when basic needs are met, people will seek to build, enrich, and create above and beyond that. To claim that imposing financial adversity is for a person's own good is ridiculous and seems to me the primary source of evil in the world, since it gives wealthy people a justification for accumulating power while disenfranchising and enslaving the rest of the population.

As I stated before, if a person has no options, and is at the mercy of a power over them, they are functionally a slave. Now, you may say "what if they have a benevolent slave master?" but this is the kind of naiveté that leads to dystopia. Even a cursory familiarity with history shows that the best times and places to live are those which decentralize power and resources to their citizens, and the worst are those that concentrate power to fewer and fewer people.

Furthermore, your example of children is flawed, first because of the inherent parental relationship at play and the natural familial bond between the person in power (usually the parent) and the child. No such interest exists in purely economic relationships, where corporations view their dependents as interchangeable cogs, or totally superfluous and unwanted when they become obsolete. On top of that, plenty of children lead miserably lives precisely because their preferred way of living is at odds with the regime imposed on them by their parents. Personally, my life satisfaction improved immensely once I was out on my own as an adult and could set the parameters of my life for myself.

If you give up responsibility because you think it will bring you happiness, you will more often than not find yourself both miserable and lacking the ability to change your circumstances.
