>Reading some writings by CS Lewis
>Talks about religion as a field of study to be studied like a tech tree alongside science and civics.
>Talks about how the world could end with us becoming so advanced God returns to congratulate us or society collapsing to the point God has to come back and save us.
>This sounds like a victory vs a defeat in a Civ game

Why do I get the feeling if Lewis were alive today he'd be a massive Civ autist?

Civ VI is so overrated imo. It just feels like a lot of busy work and not a lot of strategy.

The Western fixation on linear time fosters a deep-seated anxiety, framing history as either an ascent toward an idealized future or a descent into irreversible decline. This binary thinking breeds a restless urgencyโ€”an obsession with whether we stand at the dawn of something new or the twilight of something lost. Yet this view is a distortion, a product of cultural narcissism that insists on the singular importance of the present moment. In contrast, cyclical time, long understood in Eastern traditions and ancient Western thought, dissolves this illusion. It reveals history as neither a march of progress nor an unfolding catastrophe, but an eternal rhythm of rise, fall, and renewal. The Fourth Turning articulates this lost wisdom, exposing the modern illusion that we are somehow exempt from the patterns that have governed human civilization for millennia.

To see time as linear is to resist the natural order, clinging to the hubris that history must either culminate in us or collapse upon us. This blindness fuels the collective neurosis of modernity, where every crisis is framed as an unprecedented disaster rather than a necessary phase in an ongoing cycle. The fear of an "end" arises not from reality but from an inability to perceive renewal within destruction. True clarity comes not from seeking permanence but from recognizing that transformation is the only constant. By surrendering to the inevitability of cycles, we move beyond the fragile egoism of linear time and into a deeper, more intelligent acceptance of historical flow.

TL;DR (4chan edition):
Linear time is a psyop. Makes you think you're living in THE most important eraโ€”either God-tier or end-times doom. Thatโ€™s ego bait. Reality runs on cycles: rise, fall, rebirth. Your "collapse" is just the start of the next round. Cope, seethe, embrace the wheel.

You're right that Lewis, particularly in works like Mere Christianity or The Abolition of Man, often discusses Christianity (and, more broadly, metaphysics/morality) as a fundamental "field of study" or underlying framework for understanding reality, similar to how a "tech tree" in Civ lays out the progression of knowledge. It's not just a set of beliefs, but a lens through which to interpret everything else โ€“ science, ethics, society.

CS Lewis' writings are among the most moronic I have ever encountered. Perhaps his infantile mind explains his successful work on children's fantasy.

1) On a physical level, there is no evidence that time is cyclical. If it is, then it must be on an inconceivably huge scale.
2) On a similar note, Hinduism believes we're in a period of societal decline (the Kali Yuga) that is part of an eternal cycle, but we won't get back to the good part for hundreds of thousands of years, so from our perspective it might as well be an unending decline. The idea that things will get better long after even our great-great-grandchildren are forgotten would be not much comfort to me, anyway.

I agree in a sense
"Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." ~ Jesus Christ

I swear Oscar Wilde said somewhere that it's good to be childlike, but never to be childish. That distinction I would encourage you to heed. And now remember who is sounding cynical here, you. Meanwhile Lewis wanted to what(?), indulge in a bit of allegory, a bit of fantasy writing that parses apart the phenomena of life? That sounds very pure, and childlike. But not jaded and childish like someone rigid, rationalist, materialist. Thinks spiritual writing is dumb. How do you not have a low opinion of philosophy at large?

You have to be thankful and present and just like a monks first task is to clean the temple with a broom you have to take care of your body and your surroundings as a test of your presence. It is also most disgraceful to be a drag on those around you. Moreover, gooning is most unwise.
