It's just the byproduct of realising that a previous cultural narrative is an insufficient failure. Tradition failed, then messianism failed, then rationalism failed. The weak-willed people will either pretend they didn't fail and cling to a structure they don't really believe in (conservatives), or become immersed in groupthink (progressives). You just have to find the new ground in your own experience. Pic related

Yes

Not necessarily, athough there isn't exactly a static definition of the term Nihilism so really it depends on the context.
