You can still take notes, write down about your impressions, the structure, the characters. I do memorize a lot of stuff, mostly poetry but also quotes I appreciate. It's a good exercise and it's helpful.

After reading a chapter try to remember the events of what happened backwards

Write a page or two of commentary after each chapter. It doesn't have to be good commentary. You can throw it out afterwards.

I do this and it really helps. Talk about what you just read with someone, write a review on it after you're done, take notes, annotate. Try to let what you just read "stew" in your brain for a bit before moving on.
