Baron Ungern was an anti-communist general in the Russian Civil War and then an independent warlord who intervened in Mongolia against China. A part of the Russian Empire's Baltic German minority, Ungern was an ultraconservative monarchist who aspired to restore the Russian monarchy after the 1917 Russian Revolutions and to revive the Mongol Empire under the rule of the Bogd Khan. His attraction to Vajrayana Buddhism and his eccentric, often violent, treatment of enemies and his own men earned him the sobriquet "the Mad Baron" or "the Bloody Baron". He was viewed by his Mongolian subjects during his rule as the "God of War".

The Russian and Chinese civil wars were continuous with one another (China's lasting 50 years) and there are a lot of crazy stories from the "Warlord Era" of China and the insane border gore, with various Muslim semi states, Tibet, bandit kingdoms, etc.

Unfortunately, English language coverage tends to be shit and only focus on the CCP vs KMT and Japs, the later phases of a war stretching half a century. Wikipedia reflects this bias and if you want the real Chinese civil war you have to look it up under the auspices of like 35 different articles about individual wars within the war because the main one focuses on the KMT so much.
