Has anyone else tried reading McEwan's "First Love, Last Rites"? I had to put it down after the hideous short story that was the second one. Very gifted writer notwithstanding.

This. McEwan is a writer for TV critics and prize judges. He's so middle class he hires somebody else to do his shitting.

I (sort of) enjoyed the first half, specially the glimpse we have of her gifted and stuffy mind. The rest was so bland and pointlessly drawn out I decided that never to read another McEwan afterwards.

At least the film was pretty good. It's another example of how cinema can elevate the poorest source material. Looks at Jaws, The Godfather etc.
