I'm an ESL and found the English translation of St. Augustine's Confessions by Henry Chadwick (Oxford University Press) quite hard to read. Is there an easier translation? Is there a consensus on the best translation of this work?

How do I decide between Henry Chadwick, Albert C. Outler, F. J. Sheed, Garry Wills, Peter Constantine, R. S. Pine-Coffin, Sarah Ruden, Thomas Williams, Hal M. Helms and Edward Bouverie Pusey?

Why donโ€™t you just read it in your native language? Or better yet, in Latin

You don't need a translation, just read it in the original English.

What language do you speak that there is no translation of this critical theological treatise?

Are you Indian?

NTA. The German Church is in a pretty bad situation right now, but how is the availability of Catholic translated material in Germany? Is it really bad?

There is nothing in print either?

There's an idea of "Catholic English," which contains a smattering of Latin-derived words that we would never use otherwise, like "concupiscence" or "contrition."

>>24508527
Aquinas's Latin is very simple. If you just want a window into what Aquinas said without expending a lot of effort, use a translation, but if you're seriously interested in Aquinas, you should really learn Latin, and use translations only as an aid to understanding with the goal in mind of improving your Latin. (Bearing in mind that translations are always imperfect in greater or lesser degrees.)

Esperanto wasn't invented yet in Augustine's time. Plus he was African, so he would have written in Swahili.

I think those terms are actually useful for those who study theology.
And at least this is easier than Thomism in that the terms sometimes have different meanings from what we are used to.
Formal, potency, act, actual

But most people who read the Confessions don't study theology, right? You could have just put it in a footnote, if that specific term is so important.

You are German. Avoid Augustine and read Luther instead as you were born to do. Or commit to the LARP and learn Latin. Cosmopolitanism got you into this mess in the first place, and a bunch of Zainichi Kankokujin LARPing as Rednecks and African-Americans on a Mongolian basket weaving forum won't make it any easier for you.
