There's not any biological basis for it but in terms of artistic depiction, a small (unerect) dick was noble because it signified control over base instinct. Large dicks were comical. Having a donkey dick was akin to being a donkey.

NASB95 is a word-for-word translation, which makes it great for study, but the language can get pretty "clunky" because of that. The ESV is really nice for a first time read-through, it's a solid and trusted translation but is sort of more thought-for-thought than word-for-word.

For me it's a King Jimmy, with a center column reference. There are notes in the reference that help with the antiquated language. For instance the beginning of James reads something like "be not many masters, for we face the greater condemnation".. "master" in this sense means "teacher".

Mostly I use the Reformation Heritage KJV, though, since practically every verse has some notes that give greater understanding and context.

A concordance, biblical atlas and a Bible dictionary are also very useful. A Greek/English interlinear Bible is also useful.

Tl;dr, My suggestion is to start with the NASB or ESV for your first reading, then move to the KJV for long-term study and memorization, because the prose is so based. Quoting scripture from the NIV or something just sounds lame.

Oh, and RC Sproul wrote a great short book on biblical interpretation and study called "Knowing Scripture". He's a Presbyterian, but the book is purely on the various methods of translation and analysis, so if you're Catholic, Orthodox or whatever, it'll still be useful to you. About 100 pages, maybe a 2 hour read. Lectures on YouTube, also.

Jews, as they are now, didn't write the texts. I daresay they well knew that Christ was the Messiah, and yet they hated Him all the more for it. In order to retroactively justify this they've either ignored or deliberately misunderstood many parts of the OT, such as the "seventy weeks of years" which was prophesied around five hundred years before Christ was born. In addition, there are elements in the OT that aren't fully explained that only make sense in light of Christian doctrine, such as the Trinity, hinted at by God appearing to Abraham in the form of three men (and Abraham recognizes it's God and not a group of angels or something).
In summation, the Old Testament isn't a Jewish text used by Christians. It's a proto-Christian text designed to prepare the Jews for Christ. Considering how much of the OT is directly about the Messiah, and how Christ fulfills these prophecies.
