Herbert's prose is genuinely horrid. LotR is the same way, dry ass writing

>prose bad
People just parrot shit without even thinking. What's wrong with it? Not pretentious and fart huffy enough? Stuff like the litany against fear is more memorable and powerful than your nu-male David Foster Wallace tripe.

The beginning of Dune is the least well-written part of the book, which is why casuals drop it at that point and draw retarded conclusions like yours.

How could one possibly think that? It's very compelling and flowing, just right for the story it's trying to deliver. Do you really think Proustean prose would improve the book?

It'll never not be funny that materialists understand religion far better than the religious.

Nigga, what? Frank Herbert has great writing. At least in the original book which is the one I remember the most.

Lotr is pretty bad. Did people even read the books? I suspect most just watch the movies and youtube lore videos. Bunch of posers.

George unironically runs laps around him, Herbert is just autistic. George actually can write a good story with engaging world building.

Herbert is one of the only writers that i have encountered that expresses some of the deepest ineffable feelings that I have experienced while on hallucinogens. I think that hes a genius shaman kind of author. A blender of gestalts and fantasy. His world building is impressive but tends to eat its own tail in terms of expressing meta themes.

House Atreides rules by the personal honour and bravery of the Duke. It kills his father and grandfather. The Bene Gesserit couldn't control what their breeding program produced. Paul couldn't control what his assuming the mantle of prophecy produced. The tool shapes the hand that wields it. That which gives you power can always be the means of your own destruction.

But yeah, "religion is le tool", you hydrocephalus cretin.

I don’t understand the appeal of Dune at all. In fact, Tolkien’s books are the only fantasy or sci fi books I’ve ever remotely enjoyed. I don’t know if my brain is just poisoned from video games and anime or what, but I just find 99.99% of fantasy and science fiction is total slop.

Tolkien wrote his book because of Paganism, not Catholicism. So he was wrong about religion.

>Herbert's prose is genuinely horrid

It's forgivable for that era and cohort of SciFi, which says a lot about the genre itself. It all pales in comparison to the Space Race and Moon Landing. The main thing is prescience becoming a problem in tandem with AI, and Grug Man still having a vote while we're straining toward Overman.

>LotR is the same way, dry ass writing

Isn't a novel, and only as dry as any other prose epic.

The Sopranos theme works oddly well for Paul Atreides:

You woke up this morning
Got yourself a (las)gun
Your mama always said you'd be the chosen one
She said, you're one in a million
You got to burn to shine
But you were born under a bad sign
With a blue (within blue) moon in your eyes
When you woke up this morning
All that love had gone
Your papa never told you
About right and wrong
But you're, but you're looking good, baby
I believe that you're feeling fine, shame about it
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes
So sing it now
Woke up this morning
(You got a blue moon)
Got a blue moon in your eyes
(So sad)
(Goddamn, a goddamn shame about it)
Woke up this morning
(You got a blue moon)
Got a blue moon in your eyes
You woke up this morning
The world turned upside down
Lord above, thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked into town
But you're, but you're one in a million
'Cause you've got that shotgun shine, shame about it
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes, yeah
Woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun
Got yourself a gun
Got yourself a gun
