Too much sci-fi mumbo jumbo made parts of it unbearable and his personal beliefs (he is a techbro who thinks states will break down and corporations will rule the universe) leak into the text a fair bit.
If you don't mind that it's good.

The author is mostly based with some occasional weird takes about politics and is definitely no pacifist but I did enjoy most of his first novel. There are some parts with a bit too much fan-service (for my taste) but I guess he wanted to throw a bone to the younger audience that is still in the heavy grip of their raging hormones.
I'm curious about his take on the ethics of war and I hope he finds the opportunity to weave this into one of his next three novels somehow as I grew up in a pacifistic household (we didn't talk much at home so it was just "war's bad, mkay") so I'm curious about his take as he is/was involved with the defense industry. You can tell he has CS and engineering background that found its way into some well executed action scenes that were exciting to read and I've enjoyed it but I'm not really a big reader so ymmv. There are lots of Easter eggs in this novel that will trigger some nostalgia in people of a certain vintage and nerdy way of growing up. I would say if you enjoyed "the expanse" you will most definitely enjoy this but if you're a hard-core leftist you might want to skip it. I found some parts of this novel weirdly relatable but I guess I'm a schizo.

Pic related because he makes us wait for the second novel that is overdue but I guess managing the health issues in his family and directing the audio-book took more effort than anticipated.

Thank you for the thorough reply. I think I will pick it up. I’m not much of a reader either, but Devon Eriksen is one of my favorite Twitter users and I find myself nodding along with his takes on most things, so figured a sci-fi novel authored by him would be equally enjoyable.

>he worked in defense
Did he? I didn’t know that. Thought he was a private sector software engineer before.

>private sector software engineer
I may have misinterpreted something here but I think he worked on firmware that is used in guided weapons, probably some kind of rockets. He described them as products which never resulted in "customer feedback", which is some pretty dark humor but I guess you're already familiar with his non-pacifist attitude. Weapons shouldn't be necessary in an ideal world but the world is far from ideal and I rather see weapons in the hands of people who are mostly rational (and who have something to lose) than in the hands of religiously motivated nutjobs that seem to be too dense to apply logic and reason to limit the use of force to the minimum necessary.

This is funny because it’s the midwit meme. It’s the default, instinctive position on violence with the only deviation found among the mid-IQ with a chip on their shoulder.

Grug:
>”Sharp stick only for Grug Tribe. Thunk tribe bad, Thunk savage!”

Midwit:
>”noooo violence is le heckin’ morally wrong! Golden rule! Imagine all the people… ”

High IQ:
>just what you said, plus something about game theory, fitness scores, and zero-sum conflict resolution. Derived from calculation.

Most people are domestic cats that lost their stomach for the things necessary to allow them to live their "morally superior" life. "Ewww, did you just use your fangs to KILL a mouse"? Just to turn around to eat meat out of cans so they can pretend that that meat grew on trees or something.
I feel stupid that I fell for their virtue signalling bullshit.
