Harold Bloom said that if kindles had been invented first, then the invention of paper books would be seen as a step forward in progress. You don't need to charge them and you can read them in the bath.

For me, its superior. Idgaf about muh feeling the paper, being able to set your own custom fonts, margins and changing the size is god tier. I have different settings and fonts for non-fiction, fantasy, detective etc and recently got my hands on very rare e-text fonts that elevated my reading to another level. I also have saved probably tens of thousans of dollars and thats always a plus

see this is exactly the type of book where the e reader really sucks for me. Because any time I read a detective book I will find myself flipping back and fourth to go over some detail or something and this is exactly the one thing the ereader just fails at. You cant quickly flip around and hold your place. At least I cant

I bet you do lmao, what a luddite. You should start reading more fantasy and scifi, there's a chance it will slightly improve your imagination - just enough to allow you to conceptualize putting a downloaded epub onto a jailbroken Kindle.
They really do exist to drain subscription money from users, you are correct, but how does that affect anyone who's not a tech illiterate grandma?

Same feeling about the fonts. There's a 200 volume series in my library, Soviet era, 1970-80s, great selection of titles, and these are excellent editions with extensive footnotes and good translations.
But I will probably read very few, that old tiny Soviet font is atrocious. Have them all as ebooks.
Also, many notes and comments on the text are at the end of the book, making the reading process impossible. Ebooks don't have this issue, I can have everything as a footnote at the bottom.
Some new books are printed in fucking Arial or another sansslop font, not reading that shit. Magic Mountain is half a meter thick, it's ridiculous, ebook saves the day again.
Many paper books are perfectly fine, but some titles I wouldn't have read if not for my e-reader.

You make good points, but in the end it’s a question of soul. It’s just more soulful to hold a real book in your hands that has an aura and character instead of a black soulless e-reader. I don’t want to live in a world where everyone reads on an e-reader.

It's not a e-reader, it's a physical storefront for a digital platform that collects your data, deletes your books, and forces you to watch ads (unless you literally pay them 10 dollars so that they "remove" ads for you). Greatest invention indeed! If you're stupid goy that is.

I have kindler 10th gen with WinterBreak installed and it's trash without KOreader, absolute garbage.

This seems like an darkacademia arthoe take (no offense intended).
I honestly don't care what other people are doing. Yes, in principle, it would be more artsy and pleasant to see 3 people on park benches holding books instead of some ipad-looking tablet things. I would also love to see people around me holding paper books and reading them. Yet it doesn't affect my choices.
Calling e-readers intrinsically soulless seems ideological. I'm not reading a digital device, I'm reading a book, many books. And "aura and character" come from the substance first and foremost. The kind of aura you meant isn't much different from an aura of unpacking videos.

Kindles are just cheaper and built better, non-retards like >>24515404 can easily uncuck them. A trick incomprehensible to a luddite mind.
Kobo Libra is much better ergonomically though. I'm kind of glad I bricked my Paperwhite, Libra is better to hold. I run the same software on both, so the only other difference is worse battery life on Kobo (not an issue).

In my opinion this kind of materiality constitutes the character of a book. What we read on e-readers aren’t real books, it’s ebooks, so basically books reduced to its informational value. I understand that this is an upgrade comfort wise, but besides that it’s a downgrade. To a physical book you can have a connection that goes beyond reading it for informational value, I like that. They’re unique and get shaped through the reader’s hand, that doesn’t happen with an ebook.
I don’t think it’s as easy to reject the environmental influence as you do. Maybe seeing other people read physical books doesn’t have a conscious influence on oneself, but at least an unconscious influence I’m sure of. Aesthetics aren’t priority number one, but they do have value.

Kobo is a chinesium piece of shit that starts lagging in a month while my kindle basic from 2018 is as snappy as it was when I first bought it. If you are thinking about buying an ereader just follow this guide:
>buy kindle basic 2022, greatest ereader ever made, (if you want faggy orange light get the paperwhite.)
>as soon as you turn on your kindle register it with amazon account and then turn on airplane mode permanently. >remember to never turn the airplane mode off or all your sideloaded books will be deleted.
>download Calibre on pc and get the kfx converter plugin
>download .mobi and .azw3 format books from Anna's archive and convert them to kfx.
>send them to the kindle through USB
Thats it, you will never have to buy another book for the next 10-15 years, if you treat your ereader with care it will last even more.

This is bullshit. I also have mine in airplane mode permanently, but had to turn it off to make a purchase for my mum a while ago and nothing was deleted.
I also can just transfer mobis directly to my kindle without having to convert to kfx. Is that only relevant for specific models? And no, my kindle is not jailbroken.

I did say that seeing others would have a conscious effect.
Perhaps, through the power of autism, I have a deep connection to my digital library, which is not just an epub dump. Some books were made by me.
If I could afford to have that in paper, I would definitely love that. Currently reading mostly on Kobo and using library books for diversity of options.

I used to think this, but if you use something like koreader with the right shortcuts (like long press corners for last next location), you can click on footnotes, or highlight a word and search for ocurrences back and forth even faster than in real books. In russian books, weird names I might not remember I can just highlight and search back progressively, then when I'm done I just press the last location button and I'm back to where I was. Plus you can have many bookmarks, just a long press of a corner away. You can click on a corner to save bookmarks. It's just way way superior to real books when you have the right software (aka koreader).

e-readers without koreader are literally worthless to me.

I like the screens. Much more pleasant experience reading on a kindle than a phone or tablet. Also the benefit of finding definitions with a simple press on the word for either.
Books still win in comfort though.
The sound of pages turning, the smell, the weight. Something is incredibly satisfying about the tangibility of books over ebooks.

I have 12 main shortcuts that I couldn't do without right now. I grew into these adding them little by little.

Corner taps:
toggle frontlight,
Manual fullscreen refresh (a bit useless since I enabled it for every page turn),
toggle bookmark on this page,
toggle dark mode.

Corner long taps:
Bottom corners: Prev / Next location (way more important than you could initially think, I enable add to locations the page when I open a book in the settings too)
Top corners: Open bookmarks, open table of contents

Swipes:
Left edge: Brightness
Right edge: Rotate left / right 90 degrees
Bottom edge: Fit to page, fit to width

Last two are absolutely game changing, without them it's a pain in the ass to read fixed-format documents unless you have an e-reader that is ridiculously big.

This is kind of ridiculous if you talk about ergonomics, with a book you have to hold both edges of the book so it doesn't close on you, and you have to find good illumination. I have physical books that I no longer open because I have them on my e-reader, they're just cool to have as decoration at this point.

This is the way. I plan on purchasing the books I ended up loving and building out my physical library once I move into a new house.
Also I enjoy being able to try out a book that I would have never read otherwise to just end up enjoying it

ebooks are incredibly cheap on the amazon store and regularly go on sale. That said, you can add your own books to it using a computer programme

nah, it's all the usual half-remembered rumors and misunderstandings that every piracy scene has. they all 'just work' still and it's great, though koreader does require a jailbreak, but it's a preference thing

however what is true is that Amazon is actively finding ways to stop sideloaded books. they completely changed Kindle of PC so it downloads in a format not even caliber can handle, they removed the "Download and send via USB" feature on Amazon itself, and they're constantly changing the requirements for Email to Kindle

they are very aware of Anna, and they know a large portion of their audience is too because zoomers fucking can't help themselves from bragging on social media, so it's extremely likely in the next 5 years that they'll start finding ways to purge existing books off their devices and find ways to detect if DRM has been stripped

you guys are being dumb. i don't really like bloom, but his point isn't that books are waterproof and kindles aren't.
when he said that, kindles cost around $600 in today's money whereas the typical book cost $10-$15 brand new. i doubt bloom would advocate reading a $600 book in the bath, he's just saying it's not that as big of a fucking deal if you get a book water damaged compared to a $600 gadget water damaged.
fucking christ.

600 is an absolutely retarded price
you can get them used on ebay for around 100 if you aren't a "must have newest flagship phone every year" fag
and even if you do buy a shiny new one they're still like 300 max for the best "normal book reading" one unless you go for non novel related gimmicks like the big tablets with color screens and styluses

some e-readers are approaching tablet territory with the size, color displays, full OSes, styluses etc. which is nice and all, but the refresh rate on e-paper is still abysmal; useless for anything other than reading static text.
