I put forth Lost Horizon by James Hilton. It being forgotten is ironic because this is the nove that invented and popularized Shangri-La, a forgotten Edenic paradise in the Tibetan mountains where no one grows old.
Also, scientism has killed the possibility of novels like this being written. The 20th century and its "advancements" truly were a disaster for human creativity

Shangri-La is obviously a metaphor for spiritual enlightenment.

Shangri-La is a bastardization of Shambhala which appears in the Tibetan Buddhist Kalachakra Tantra

The point is that Hilton didn't invent it. In fact it really exists. It goes by many names and was once a universal belief. It was no easier to think of it as a fictitious place than it was to be an atheist. Modernity and scientism didn't kill novels like Lost Horizon, they made them possible.

I guess it’s hard to call it forgotten when it’s been name dropped and even called prophetic by the last 2 or 3 popes but “lord of the world” by Robert hugh benson should be a bigger deal than it is

1. It is remembered by many because there was a famous Frank Capra adaptation
2. Nothing about your post is "ironic." Please, do not misuse words.

Actually I imagine most who know of this story nowadays probably know it from the godawful Liv Ullmann musical from the 70s.

It is so notorious because the story itself isn't much for kids but an adult wouldn't want to watch a cheesy musical like this so it doesn't really have a proper demographic to target itself to. Also it's got that ugly crooked nosed Michael Yorke in it

It is ironic that a famous book about a forgotten place is now forgotten. I'm sorry that you don't know the definition of ironic.

Nobody under 40 knows who Frank Capra is. 5% of people over 40 remember who Frank Capra is.
