I think you're missing the point. You're looking at philosophy as an object in the wider system of utility, something which either is a tool meant for some practical purpose - bringing in money, or improving one's ability to bring in money - or is useless.
A better question to ask would be why anyone engages in philosophy at all. The world is what it is, regardless of what people think about it. In some ways, philosophy is like mountains. You climb it because it's there, or you don't climb it because it's there. To one with the philosophical spirit, the thirst for truth, philosophy is its own end. To one without, it's ridiculous navel-gazing and word games.
