If you were trying to teach someone how to be a good writer, who would be your picks to read? You get five choices MAX. Not who's the best, or who's the most fun to read, but who would you learn best from if you read? Although there will be an overlap there.

Hugo, Shakespeare, Wilde, Hunter S Thompson and maybe Nabokov

I think that gives you a good spread of styles and genres to learn from.

I'm not saying he's the best, but his style is kind of on the far end of a chaotic, realist, truthfulness slider (in which Tolstoy would be on the far opposite), so I think if you wanted to learn, reading both would be a good idea. Your thoughts?
