In order,
• The Present Age, from his Two Ages literary review (just a short essay, but a brilliant one)
• Repetition
• Sickness Unto Death
those are the three I was told to start with by a Kierkegaard scholar a couple years ago

Hegel, like that other anon said. A lot of his writing are a response to him. Hegel was a very popular philosopher back at his time. There are lots of decent commentaries on him, get those "companion to Kierkegaard" from some whatever publisher, you can easily download those. I think that I got that Blackwell one that was ok (as in me, a layperson that has read some history of philosophy books, being able to understand what they were writing about), but there are lots of different ones.

I started with either/or, Kierkegaarde was writing to an audience of the slightly educated, you don't need much to start.

But this anon is right too. A lot of his works were targeting general people of his time. I think that On My Work As An Author will give you an appreciation of what is that he is actually doing. I'm not even Christian, but he is one of my favorite philosophers.
