>Is Jane Austen really good?
Yes.

>What am I in for?
The poorest people possible who can pretend to be middle class trying to date, while being really awful women. She writes for women, so she writes about women being really awful women, as a diagnostic. The insight into women's interiority is magnificent.

Also remember they're not rich like in the TV shows: they're the poorest people who could be invited to the poorest dance. "Just barely part of society, and we'd never invite them to our ball, but we have to sit with them at church instead of forcing them into the poor pews at the back."

The tea setting you're showing is way too expensive for Austen's characters to use. This ought to inform your opinion about Mister Darcy slumming it for cheap seat minge.

Plots aren’t amazing because of the genre but the characters are very well fleshed out and memorable. Lizzy is a bit not like other girls though. Definitely worth a read

They're not that poor - their father has a nice estate but it's entailed to a cousin. the Bennet girls will get £1000 each from their mother, that's just not enough to live on with no work and buy dresses. £30 was the average yearly wage, and 4% was the expected interest on the capital. They're about to crash out of the upper class if they don't marry well.

They're not aristocracy
They're not nobility
They're not landed gentry
They are barely able to marry the most impoverished landed gentry due to the entail meaning they're technically the daughters of land owners.
They are functionally middle class. They certainly talk like it. Becoming a junior officer's whore is middle class.

And this is Austen's *richest* group of women.
