Are the modern versions of 'The Merchant of Venice' on amazon edited in some way to take out the "anti-semitism" or are they authentic? I want to read the story correctly.

There's nothing anti-semitic in Merchant of Venice. The play is anti-Christian because it uses forced conversion. Read the *one scene* Act 5 until you understand, pay attention to the new wife's ceasing to speak.

It isn't Philo-semitic. You're not reading it in the sense that a Shakespearean audience would read it. Shylock's argument is meant to delight the lawyers in the room while still being objectionably non-Christian. Shakespeare is playing with Hubris here, but the Hubris is being Jewish when Christ is King. Shylock at his most Shylock is still a stage villain. And the audience is prompted to laugh. "Yes of course you've got arms, YOU FUCKEN JEW CUNT." "Jewishness" is an ontological category: there is no escape from it by an appeal to common humanity because Jewishness is not commonly human: it is not christian; for the audience. Now Shakespeare's text might be making a universal humanist argument, but it has to make it with an audience that treats Jews as not human. And the lawyers in the audience will enjoy it all the more so because a few words turns Shylock from an inhuman monster into a decent human being: I love you Jesus Christ.

The PRIORESS is anti-jewish, the narrator Chaucer himself is not. Notice that after the tale there's an awkward silence because everyone knows how outrageous the story is. Nothing about the story is intended to be believable as it is a parody of such folk stories in England Iike little saint Hugh.
