What are some retellings of old tales from alternative character viewpoints that don't mire themselves in feminist or gay goobledegook? Pic unrelated

<Pic attached> is first in a trilogy (or maybe more). Merlin (of King Arthur fame) telling his life from boy onwards.

Bernard Cornwell series ("Warlord Chronicles"?) was from the perspective of some random old monk who used to be a soldier in King Arthur's army.

A few more:

— Par Lagkervist “Barabbas”, topic is pretty obvious

— Mary Renault told a bunch of Ancient Greek stuff, often from odd perspectives. It's mostly very faggotty but perhaps less annoying than present-day faggoty stuff, since she wrote in the 1950s or something.

— C. S. Lewis "Till We Have Faces" is Cupid & Psyche retold from perspective of Psyche's ugly sister, but he totally refashions it into a quasi-Christian thing. A good book but it's not really the Greek story at all.

He said which doesn't mire itself in feminist or gay goobledegook. I don't know why he's into sucking of vietnamese men, but Grendel has an accident in front of mother.
