This wasn't about not-Huey P. Long at all. I did like it, but I felt a little cheated by the feel good ending in the last few pages. Jack Burden didn't earn it.

Are you talking about the book or Huey P. Long? The book really wasn't much about politics.

Does this book still get assigned? Remember reading it in high school and never heard anything about it since

I don't know. It wasn't assigned when I was in high school 20 years ago. I bought it a few years ago and finally read it after my mother mentioned she was reading it recently.

All I remember from it was the "big sleep." It's not a book that resonated enough with me to have stayed in my memory. Did see the movie also with Sean Penn I guess long time ago as well but the movie likewise made no impression on me I guess because I don't remember a thing from it.

The main character is interesting enough with his own brand of nihilism that he gets over. I got a little irritated with the repetition that the author liked to use. It was used too much instead of bringing focus to more critical parts only.
