I've always wanted to be a creative ever since I was young. I've day dreamed about being one and tried working my ass off trying to write ever since I was around 12. My parents tried pushing me towards it for school assignments. I also wanted to draw but never got into it seriously.

I've been wanting to write again for nearly 2 years now and have barely made any progress towards that goal. I've only done one little drabble like 2 years ago and haven't done any exercises since then. I've been trying to get myself to write, but all of it looks too complicated and exhausting for me. I've tried multiple different strategies, but they never seem to work. I've tried forcing myself to write, but can only make myself write a couple of sentences for barely 30 seconds before stopping and looking at my phone again.

I've never been able to complete a single multichapter story in my entire life and actually coming up with stories isn't much better. I can't think anything through and everything about trying to make an entire story looks too hard for me. I want to be a creative really badly, but nothing I've done seems to have amounted to much of anything. I want to become one so badly, and I want to stop wasting my life doing nothing.

For starters, on the next go around try rewriting your OP to reflect what you got out of your previous thread instead of just reposting it verbatim.

Were you born yesterday? Literally just do it retard. The more you do it the more you'll want to do it. The less you use your phone the less you'll want to use it. There are no secret tricks that everyone in history uses to get what they want on a silver platter. "Fake it til you make it" works for most problems in life.

Professional writer here (full disclosure: I get paid to write. But I write video games)
>I've never been able to complete a single multichapter story in my entire life
This was, and still is, literally me. I've done more writing in the first year I started doing it as my job as I had in the 10 years leading up to that. Now that I'm forced to write every single day though, I can see myself improving, and it makes me want to write 'for fun' as well.
So... Maybe find some club or class or something where you're forced to write every single day/week so you don't chicken out? Also never start from multi-chapter stories - by the time you've planned one of those out even just at the core level, you'll already be too bored with it too even start. Start with short stories, or even paragraphs. In my case, I write quests, and each sub-quest at least is self-contained so it's great practice.

You are conceptualizing a concept you've termed a "creative", assigned attributes to it, and have drawn the boundary between you and the concept, hence why you say "I really want to be a creative" or you exhibit and talk about your behavior like "can only make myself write a couple of sentences for barely 30 seconds before stopping..."

First, erase this boundary.
Second, begin the transition to a creative lifestyle. Creativity is born from observing the world around you, from your immediate surroundings to as far as you can see, hear, taste, etc.

Now, creativity is a means of communication. People who create are communicating through their medium of choice. Some people draw, some write, some dance, some film, etc.
So if creativity is communication, think very carefully about why you use speech and writing to express yourself. What was it that got you to sit down and write this post? Why did you come to /lit/?

I'd encourage you to begin thinking about multi chapter books you've read. What did you like about them, what didn't you like? What could they do better? How would they do it differently? Do this for a variety of books you've read. Why do you love some vs others?
Over time, you'll begin to build a nuanced form of your taste, which is great, because it begins to shape what you want to see in the world.

To put very plainly, people who appear creative tend to express a dissatisfaction towards the status quo and take it upon themselves to establish an equilibrium within their domain. Their degree of openness and flexibility to destroy and rebuild concepts help facilitate their exploration. These people are called "artists" "creatives" "writers" "craftsmen" and so on.

Craft competency comes with practice and lots of time. Start with foundations then work your way up, like any game, skill, or sport. There will be lots of failures, work in progresses, and false starts. These are important because for every 100, there has to be a solid 1 or 2 at least. The more you do, the more solid ones appear, and within those, the better and better.
Taste comes with exposure of the medium. You want to write? Expose yourself to LOTS of varied writing.

That 30s of writing before stopping is essentially a 0.01% of your time spent expressing yourself creatively, which is great. Now imagine you stack another 30s on top of that, then again, and again. Each time, you're widening this window to be the very thing you want to be.

Also I'd encourage stream of consciousness writing where it can be gibberish and incoherent, but you're defining space to occupy communicating creatively.

I'm personally not a fan of "forcing" or "discipline", mostly because you're not really training anything that will help you...if anything you'll be training the thing that's against creativity.

Definitely take up a writing class to learn foundations. That way you won't get lost. Creativity is sloowwww and takes lots of time, be very patient.

In a world where everyone is drawing squares, it will be the artist who draws a circle.
This is the heart of creativity

It is the artist within you that comes out for 30s at a time to write out a sentence or two. What if that artist kept writing? For a minute, or 5 minutes?

How do I make myself do it? I'm tired of only being able to stare at walls while occasionally playing a video game. I'm tired of not being able to understand all these programs and processes that everyone else can. My ADHD just makes me do nothing all day or just jerk off all day. I'm tired of being held back by this. Nothing else is stimulating for me. What the fuck do I do?

Realize ADHD doesn't make you special (everyone has it these days, including me) and suck it up until it becomes less of a chore to do whatever it is you gotta do. What you're doing is that you try to do something then immediatly quit and go back to what's most convenient. But if you force yourself to do one thing over another, your brain will replace the envy or doing that previous thing over the new one after a certain period of time. Also stop playing video games, or watching dumb youtube videos (or whatever stupid thing you do that makes you stupider).

Gee, I don't know... Maybe don't give up immediately? I mean if you're not able to comprehend the simple fact that most of it rests solely on your shoulders then there's literally nothing I or anyone else can do to help.
And, like I said, it starts by realizing that you're not special whatsoever, so you don't have any excuse. Nothing substantial in this world has been brought about without at least some mild discomfort.
Make it a habit and your brain will feel addicted to that kind of thing, and not doing it will feel extremely wrong (you'll always have that voice at the back of your brain screaming at you to get back to it). Anyways, I won't give any more advices because there isn't any left to give. Maybe try doing it first thing in the morning every day when your brain hasn't been fried all throughout the day

Expression is typically fuelled by the necessity to expel emotion. Suffering is typically that fuels the reactor wheels of writing. Where it becomes more painful to not attempt to reach catharsis than it does to subsist with that pain. So excess passions is immensely helpful, and certainly important when it comes to saying something affecting. Regardless of the amount of pain you hold inside of you I would recommend catching your mind in the morning before it has a chance to propel itself toward the well-worn canyons of its own conditioning. Jerking off and sloth are formations made of habit. They can be undone by presence and clarity of mind. If you can somehow manipulate yourself into going for walk or swim or anything that brings you into a relative control of yourself, and if you can do this thing first in the morning, you will find you have far more authority over the rest of your day. I get lost in the waters too. And you would have to be reckless to take advice, especially that of a stranger over the internet.

not doing anything wouldn't be a problem if you didn't have pesky ideas like "being a creative" to ruin it. just go in the opposite direction, stop struggling and give up on everything. i think that's easier than getting yourself to do something.

Here's some advice on how to be a creative OP. It's literally not that hard to start.
1) Just do it. Thats it. Write. Who cares if you don't finish anything. Just write. 100 word flash fiction, 3,000 word short stories. Just put the words out. You're not making a best seller, you're not making money from this. You're just trying to get it out of your mind.

2) Find inspiration. This can be listening to music, playing games, watching movies, reading books, or even jerking off. Take notes of what it was that inspired you to begin with. Was it the characters? The tone or themes? The way the scene was set up? Can you visualize it when you close your eyes? You have to analyze what inspires you as well.

3) Read a lot. Yeah motherfucker, you need to read books. A good writer is a good reader. It doesn't matter if its goosebumps or the funny pages, classics or web novel slop. Just read books, articles, and more. Like with inspiration above, analyze what you read and try to take away from it what you can when you finish. When I finish a book I like to spend a day skimming pages I bookmarked and think about what I want to take away from the book.

4) Take breaks. They'll tell you to write every day, but sometimes you need a break from constantly writing. Play games, jerk off, go for a long walk, cook some delicious food, or do something. Recharge your creativity batteries, especially early on so you don't burn yourself out.

That's a good list of ways to just start out. Like I said you're not trying to make money at this. If you want to do it later, that's only after you've started get in the habit of being creative. Congrats; you're now a creative as long as you produce shit.

Outside pressure is always the best when it comes to lazy fucks such as yourself. Join a club or a weekly meeting or make some deal with a friend or coworker that you'll show them something new every week. When you stop deriving pleasure from something, it is still a conscious effort to not continue. Like when your mother forces you to eat vegetables, force yourself to work on it until it feels natural.

You have to like being creative for its own sake. If you don't find the act itself to be fun, you're never going to make it. That's all there is to it.

Now, to be a ground-breaking creative, is a different story. But every creative genius likes being creative for its own sake.

Yes. Less thinking, more doing. You come off as deeply retarded or underage. This thread should have ended after the first post. Everybody is telling you the same exact thing and you refuse to put in the work needed; yet you act like what everybody is telling you is inconceivable (like that black kid who couldn't understand 'what if' scenarios after getting arrested by the police). I sincerely hope this is bait. If it isn't (and you aren't underage), you are too far gone for anybody to help you. If you don't think you have profound mental retardation then rethink your life choices and get to work and accept that not everything instantly gives you the dopamine you crave. This starts as homework, like school. I assume you went to school yes?

If you want to be a little bit less retarded then at least try (and you'll be known as king amongst the retards, the one who made it). Everybody's telling you the same thing: try and stick with it. Five minutes matters. Make progress in pomodoro-timer-sized increments and set lots of reminders on your phone to work at it at different points in the day. Can't believe I'm bringing up Cas from Clutterbug on an anonymous literature weaving forum but she is a home organising mom with ADHD who therebyunto'd've has all kinds of ADHD advice you might be interested in.

I fear that reading will poison my thoughts with the thoughts of others.
>enrichment
Even though I feel interest for ideas, every artist, writer, creator admits to having been influenced by someone else. While that isn't bad, I would hate to lose myself in someone else's work, thereby becoming only a husk occupied by someone else's ideas.
>we all are occupied by foreign ideas.
Yes, but that happens through experience. Who you are is a combination lf your genetics and your experiences. Thus making it unique, and therefore valuable. However, beciming consumed by an author's influence is becoming a shallow, incomplete version of the original author. As these ideas are not shaped by your experience or your mind.
>reading is an experience in itself
Sure, but these authors came up with their ideas through their lived experiences. Reading and living are way too different from each other to be considered the same kind of experience.
>win some, lose some
This is correct. In order to win an idea, you must lose another. Perhaps this siggests a darwinian struggle of ideas within the mind.
Perhaps you must risk your own death through experience in order to be able to actually think. Maybe that is what reading is.

Idk. Thoughts?

You don't just HEAR the things on the lists
You don't FORMULATE PLANS with the things on the lists
You DO the things on the list in order to DO THINGS.
I have given you multiple explicit forms of actionable advice and you're still whining. Fuck you, you're not gonna make it and that's cosmologically good. If the carrot doesn't work then the stick of failure will be the only possible motivator toward action you fucking coward.
Knowing is not the fucking issue. You need ACTION. I can give advice on how to make it easier to take action but there is NO SUBSTITUTE for actually taking action. I don't care if you heard it all before because you HAVEN'T BEEN APPLYING IT.
Let's say you want to write. Here's how to apply the page
1: Break down simple tasks. Well, that means instead of writing a chapter, you write a page. But you STILL NEED TO WRITE
2: Schedule breaks. This means outside of the scheduled break you STILL NEED TO WRITE
3: Thought dumping. It clears your mind so you are ready to WRITE.
4: Body doubling. This keeps you accountable so you will ACTUALLY WRITE.
5: Leverage organisaton to have it clear what you want to do, which is to ACTUALLY WRITE
6: Fidget. As a temporary distraction so you can get back to ACTUALLY WRITING
7: Gamify.Create a reward structure to motivate you ACTUALLY WRITING
8: Optimise your environment to minimize distractions while you ACTUALLY WRITE
9: Prioritize self-care so you can be energised to ACTUALLY WRITE

There is no simpler way to put this - as it stands, until you change, you are a lost cause.

People don't really understand what it's like to have actual ADHD. "Just do it" doesn't work, it works for normal people that have brains which take the hint and start producing dopamine as they should. An ADHD person will try and it feels pointless, every signal in their body is telling them to stop and that it's not going to work and that they need to do something else that's much more important and worthwhile. If they're a masochist and particularly stubborn, they might force themselves to do it for 5-10 minutes before becoming so mentally exhausted they have to take a break with something their brain actually finds rewarding. A normal person might experience something similar, an initial hump of inertia before their brains take the hint and they get in the zone - this never happens to an ADHD person, no matter what trick you try.

@24528024
Stop wallowing in self-pity. For one it doesn't sound like you have ADHD at all. ADHD people are easily energised which is entirely the problem.
In any case, it's not like I don't know what having bad brain chemistry is like. I am autistic. The literal aspergers kind. It is also a brain disorder - the brain hyperprocesses info piecemeal rather than associatively, which is what leads to sensory overwhelm.
The strategies used to deal with autism essentially involve learning tricks to use your cognitive resources to socially pass, systematically doing through logical reason what other humans do intuitively. Certain pieces of perfectly normal human advice eg take breathers, reenergise with fun activities, ask questions to socially engage, be organised etc. become particularly applicable due to how the autistic brain works. So @24527895 really pisses me off because 'it works for normies but it wont work for me :(' is the exact opposite of the truth. YES THE COPING STRATEGIES LIKE 'fixing it with a tomato timer and todo list' ARE EXACTLY WHAT GOOD ADVICE THAT WORKS WOULD SOUND LIKE. FOR THE ADVICE TO WORK ON THE SPECIFICALLY AFFLICTED, IT'D HAVE TO WORK AS GENERALIST ADVICE FOR NORMIES.
No brain chemistry is stopping you from putting in 5 to 15 minutes of work. That's all you, you lazy mongoloid. I am denying you any further (You)s and may God have mercy on your soul.

you don't become a creative, you either are one or you aren't. Clearly you lack the necessary drive, you're just infatuated with the idea of being a creative person. You like the idea of being a writer more than you actually like writing, which means your'e not actually a writer. You're just a vain, confused, lost person who doesn't understand the purpose of their life.

Even creative people, well, actually creative people, don't see themselves in this precious kid-gloves way. They treat what they do as work, which it is.

Your attitude of mystical admiration of the creative act just belies your own absolute lack of any creativity. Basically, the people who run the show, whatever it may be, are not awed by the tricks of the trade. You are, because you're meant to consume media, not create it.

So stop wasting your time banging your head against the wall and give up. Your wasted effort is based off a fundamental misunderstanding of yourself and of the "creative" process... which is itself an irritatingly vague, nebulous term—everything is creative in a certain light. You mean the plastic arts, which can be practiced, provided you have the necessary modicum of talent, and again, conscientiousness and drive.

You clearly lack both, again... so get over yourself.

Okay, okay, Howie thread but I gotta chime in here.
You raise some good points, but are being a bit too pessimistic. It is human history, how a person can rise from near nothing and make something of themselves; yes, even if that's a depressive, impotent state of being.
There is a certain ordinariness that comes with an honestly-pursued creative endeavor. You engage out of mere curiosity and merely for the sake of the process in itself as it unfolds for you, without regard for anyone else. It is not "training to make a commodity out of", it is more straightforward than that.
Indeed, the issue with people like OP might be a lack of honesty with themselves. Not that they necessarily aren't "meant to" engage with creative endeavors; just that they aren't paying attention to what naturally catches their attention. A Life Of One's Own by Marion Milner comes to mind.
Just my two cents.

To clarify, that whole thing is a lie anyway. As well as "supposed to" or "should do" or anything of the sort. It often takes effort to stop ignoring what catches your energy, which is always in plain sight, because you gotta realize you have a self-sabotaging narrative which you believe so thoroughly that you think it axiomatic.

Oh for fuck's sake. Yeah I've heard this a million times for every single hobby I've ever tried. I like the idea of doing anything besides sitting in my room, laying in bed, jerking off and going to sleep or looking at my phone and staring at a wall while barely being able to get out of bed. Am I seriously raising the bar too high? Is that what you're telling me?
Then am I not interested in anything at all? Because this is what it's like for everything that I've ever tried doing even for non creative hobbies or just anything in general.
I have literally tried doing several artistic hobbies and gave up each of them immediately when I was a teenager.
>Gave up on Source Filmmaker
>Gave up on GameMaker
>Gave up on FireAlpaca
>Gave up on Photoshop
>Gave up on writing
I didn't know how any of them worked or what to do. I don't even know basic trig. Even when I look art guides, I literally cannot comprehend them or figure them out. I don't want to be stuck with no creativity or being unable to express myself. This is what it's like for literally everything I try doing. I'm not able to try and keep up with any hobby. Even writing, I do it sporadically and very rarely. Stop giving me this reductionist bullshit.

I'm not here to get attention, I'm not here because I "secretly don't like doing anything creative" I'm here because I want to fucking draw, write and make something. Now are you going to give me advice or not?

Sit there with your pen, with your paper, or with your word doc. Don’t touch anything else for that hour. Only excuse out is for pissing. Don’t even bring coffee or water. Give yourself nothing else to do at all.
2. Just start, doesn’t matter what the start is, just start. Don’t overthink just start. Put the pen to paper immediately when you sit. Only lift up if you need to shit, piss, or have a hand cramp.

I have for writing, but I'm still just as unable to do it as I was before. I can barely even write for any of my assignments anymore.
I was able to do writing before without any kind of need for that. I've been RPing for years without it. But I don't know what to do nowm

Maybe you're not made for that kind of creative hobby. Have you tried something more practical and less abstract? Like painting or gardening? Woodworking, maybe? People can be creative with all sorts of things — even with mechanics. I know that basically everything becomes enjoyable only once you get some level of competence, but it shouldn't feel like a chore.

Also, ADHD is a meme and you don't have it. Americans are retarded and get diagnosed with ADHD because your psychiatrists are incompetent. It's obvious that with medication you'll get more productive — they’re amphetamines.

You should drop video games, stop watching porn, get inside communities of people, delete your social networks, delete every dating app, block porn websites, touch some grass, do some exercise every day, and try something new.

You'll never fix your life if you keep blaming a made-up pathology for every problem instead of taking responsibility for your actions and getting rid of your addictions.

>t. former person with "ADHD" who is now sober, married, has a house, a job, and no trouble focusing.

That I've heard this for literally every single hobby I've ever tried doing. I was able to write for long stretches when I was younger and now I can't make myself write at all. My medicine, ADHD, all of that shit is affecting my ability to write again. I'm still currently RPing, but not writing stuff on my own.

Delete your social media, delete YouTube from your phone, block porn sites and force yourself to stop watching them. Do some physical activity every day, even if it's just light exercise (I know it sounds like a meme, but your dopamine receptors are fried and that’s part of how you fix them). Then focus on finding real solutions to the actual problems in your life instead of chasing forms of escapism. If the problem is your education, consider getting help from a tutor. If you’ve got a shitty job, look for a new one, and so on. Throughout all of this, put the whole creativity issue on hold. Some people manage to be extremely creative in their darkest moments — clearly, you’re not one of them. And without at least a bit of peace of mind, you’re not going to get anywhere. I know it might seem hard, but I think you already know which parts of your life need fixing. Start with those.

A lot of idiots are going to come at me with evidence saying that AI makes people retarded when in actuality its a bunch of niggers telling them to explain it like they're 5.
You can probably help your creativity by exercising your brain through studying philosophy using AI and decompressing your thoughts through an LLM to help adapt your critical thinking; you'll eventually start discriminating what is true or false the more you dig deeper. Treat your relationship with it like an adversarial network and you'll likely end up getting more creative writing abilities because it rewards cognitive processes that are pivotal from linguistic thinking. It takes differing amount of times for people to learn certain topics but once you get a hang of it you'll be able to have a lot more of a schematic representation of things than a linguistic one. Hope this helps.

That's immediate kryptonite for your whole reputation in whatever 'therapeutic' organization you're contacting and you might as well just move somewhere else if you fucked up. There's always other avenues to get medications safely on your own but you'd just have to put a lot of effort into finding them.
Also if you're concerned about anxiousness you could just start off with a high CBD ratio

>How do I become a plumber?
I've always wanted to be a plumber ever since I was young. I've day dreamed about being one and tried working my ass off trying to plumb ever since I was around 12. My parents tried pushing me towards an apprenticeship. I also wanted to learn pipe cleaning but never got into it seriously.

I've been wanting to plumb again for nearly 2 years now and have barely made any progress towards that goal. I've only done one little toilet unclogging like 2 years ago and haven't done any service calls since then. I've been trying to get myself to plumb, but all of it looks too complicated and exhausting for me. I've tried multiple different strategies, but they never seem to work. I've tried forcing myself to plumb, but can only make myself pump the plunger a couple of times for barely 30 seconds before stopping and looking at my phone again.

I've never been able to complete a single major plumbing repair or installation in my entire life and actually coming up with toilet problems in my head isn't much better. I can't think anything through and everything about trying to unclog a toilet looks too hard for me. I want to be a plumber really badly, but nothing I've done seems to have amounted to much of anything. I want to become one so badly, and I want to stop wasting my life doing nothing.

Well, you can obviously do stuff (you're doing something right now!), it's just not going to be the "productive" stuff you wanted. For a normal person, the sucking eventually stops and their brain gets the hint that they're doing something useful and the feel good chemicals start to flow. That's why they all say "just do it" because a single pomodoro session is enough for a normal person for their brain to switch gears and get into the zone. For you, that never seems to happen. Either because you cannot tolerate the discomfort for longer than 30 seconds, or because the mechanism is faulty for whatever reason and it doesn't matter how much you push through.

All your options suck. Either tolerate the discomfort for a long time, maybe even forever, or you don't do anything and suffer from regret about doing nothing. I have no solution for you but I can empathize and don't blame you for your condition.

Try taking very small incremental steps. Like, if you can only handle 30 seconds of work before you give up, just do that every day and increase it by 5 seconds. Accept that it's going to suck and be unpleasant, and build up a tolerance. If you can get to 30 minutes a day, it doesn't matter that it sucks, you'll at least be making progress. Then maybe, if you're lucky, your brain might take the hint and flip the switch and it won't feel like torture anymore.

It's not that I can't handle thirty seconds of work, it's that I don't even know what to do in those thirty seconds. For drawing, i just give up and stop with drawing circles in the first few seconds. I try making timers; but I can't even make myself draw in the first place. Its the same problem with writing outside of doing role-playing. I don't know what to do. I can't even make myself begin anything in the first place. The only thing I can do is lay around while occasionally playing a video game.

1) prepare your work area i.e. paper and pen on the table
2) set a timer for 30 seconds
3) psyche yourself up and do it until the timer beeps
4) rest and shitpost
5) repeat the next day, but add 5 seconds to the timer

That's all I got, man. If that doesn't work, it's OK, you can give up, you can still have a good life even if you don't achieve your dreams.

What's wrong with giving up? If you're literally disabled and physically can't do something, then you just have to move on, maybe just live vicariously through other artists. Most people don't do anything with their lives, they have no special talents, they go to work, watch tv, fuck their wives once a month and die. No shame in being born mediocre, you're in great company.

The do it.
>No, I can't do it and I can't even do the tiniest step towards it. I can't motivate myself and I can't follow any outside advice from the internet.
Then you need help from your parents or the nurses who help you with your everyday activities.

You have to go to the paper! Come on! I believe in you! To draw you have to get near the paper.
To draw you have to go to the paper. Here's a deal: You can take your phone with you. Make your way to the paper. If you want to we can exchange a few messages while you're on your way there. It's not easy but you got this. Going to the paper is the first step! The next step will be to get your hands on the pencil. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'll talk you through it when we get there. We can do this together!

Do the thing. Stop asking for advice. You just need to do the thing on your own.

How about give him advice that works within his disability? He has ADHD. So he's not going to respond to "just do it". That never works for someone with ADHD.

Just get a reference of some random object or character and make the drawing look like that, you don't have to think about anything.

You don't. You can just draw what you see.
Try drawing this apple and post the result.
Black and white, no need to complicate it.
Just the shape, don't worry about shading.
