Badly. I asked someone to read something I wrote and they didn't love it.

I made six million dollars with my last book and publishing companies are literally begging me to write another one.

Mind giving me some tips? Do you check magazine shelves at stores and contact the company? What journals are you contacting? where do you find them? what kind? who are you interested in? did you cold call and drop them a sample of your work? can you provide a sample of your work?

You can gloat all you want, I want to do what you're doing.

It's pretty easy to get 'lished on McSweeny's but there is more to it than the millennial battlecry of "I did a thing"

Oh, well, the journal in question is actually one I got recommended to by the editor of another journal that I had submitted to beforehand. I showed the first journal three stories, the editor rejected them all, but said that one of my stories in particular might be a good fit for this current journal. So I submitted that story to this current journal and got accepted. I made sure to namedrop the editor of the original journal, which may or may not have helped, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Social media is a big way to find journals. Go to Twitter or Instagram and search "submissions," you'll usually find accounts announcing that they're open for submission to poetry or prose.

Also, Submittable is a big submissions portal that a lot of magazines and journals use. They have a "Discover" tab that you can use to search for journals open for submission. Check it out:
