Quentin’s suicide is one of the most brilliant moments in writing ever. The fact that the reader is under the illusion that he’s alive in the present only works due to Benjy narrating the first part.

You're just ESL. How do I know this? You never questioned why Quentin kept changing from a boy to a girl.

Obviously I questioned it, moron. That’s why it only works due to Benjy narrating it as it could just be him not having a solid grasp on reality and language. No one reading it for the first time will think that he’s speaking of two different Quentins unless they were spoiled.

It's quite clear that there were two quentins from the first chapter itself

NTA but bro I definitely knew they were two different people. He became a baby and a girl when Benny was recalling his teenage years. It's actually very obvious and I don't think Faulkner was even trying to do what you think he did.

Faulkner actually wanted the text to be color coded so you could distinguish the time jumps more easily. This may have helped the ESL OP avoid his disastrous imputation as to Faulkner's intention.
