I am an (former?) addict on Methadone for about a year after a year long addiction to Heroin, and prior to that a three year addiction to pharmaceutical opiates/oids (codeine, dihydrocodeine, morphine, oxycodone). I have ready Junky several times, and read Naked Lunch, any other recommendations?

Bulgakov I presume. I've read The Master and Margarita but didn't know this existed. Thanks.

Yes

He has a lot of little known short stories that are mostly extremely grim (but pretty well written). Red Crown, I Killed, and Chinese Story are my favorite.

Maybe you should stop thinking about heroin. I recommend St. Augustine's Confessions. It's on the internet!

And Interzone. In particular a section called Word. A stream on conscious piece that was sort of a middle ground between the more conventional structures of Junky and Queer and the eventual fragmented, surreal commentary of Naked Lunch.

Addicts fascinate me. I’ve tried lots of drugs and I don’t ever get a real yearning to keep using it. Amphetamines, coke, MDMA, benzos, alcohol, cigs, coffee, vapes, shrooms, LSD, 2CB… I can pound something for weeks and not want to touch it in years or ever again.
Whatever you people have I lack.
Which makes reading about all the drama confusing and annoying. If they want to quit they’d quit. Cold turkey is as effective as all the programs people use for crutches, according to AA itself and other studies.

Thank you for your props. It wasn't sustainable for me so I was happy to leave behind the lifestyle.

Read Trainspotting as a teenager, great book and film. Added the others to my list.

You are probably right. I have listened to a lot of the audiobook of St. Augustine's Confessions, but would like to read it properly. I have taken a greater interest in Christianity over the past few years having been raised atheist but moving away from it.

Interesting, I don't know why I haven't considered reading it before. I will be sure to pick up a copy.

I did all of those too from 14-21 and enjoyed them all to a degree but left them all behind. But then I discovered opiates at 21 and it was like a missing piece that had been absent all my life was finally put into place, I felt utter contentedness for the first time. That along with feeling fuzzy and warm, it felt good just to lie there "watching" TV with my eyes closed for hours on end until I eventually nodded into sleep, boredom and anxiety was impossible, as was introspecting at all or thinking about lifes woes. You might try opiates too and find they're not for you, or they might be for you but you might be able to chip and keep a lid on it, but you might not.

This one was a big hit (hehe ohoho) back in the day, and holds up pretty well. Have you read Under The Volcano? It's not about opioids of course but it's important and relevant reading.
