I found it boring, though I understand what conundrum the main character had. I work in corporate sales and my “work” personality is extroverted, charming, and broadly warm. But my personality outside of work, what’s “truer” to me is introverted, asocial, and cold. If I used my fake extroversion outside of work, I can easily socialize with people and “make friends”. Except I realized I fucking hate people that find my extroverted self attractive, so I choose radical honesty outside of work. Yozo chose the opposite and is constantly wondering why he wants to constantly kill himself…you would think he’d figure out the obvious (that living life disingenuous to yourself is worse death).

I really liked it, he reminded me too much of myself in some forms, but also made me think that me and him were not similar at all in others. He's grown to be my of my favourite classical Japanese authors. But I did like The Setting Sun more

What I wanted from it was a better exploration of what this actually felt like, not just "oh, I was clowning again and everyone loved it BUT THIS IS THE LOWEST PIT OF HELL and my friend told me I'm funny AND THE PAIN JUST DOESN'T STOP." It comes across outright pleasant if not for the descriptions of pain that we never really get to see with our own eyes.

I personally didn't like it and didn't finish it.
Really any books about a self obsessed bitch whining the whole time while navel gazing fills me with rage.
Its both tediously boring and extremely annoying. I will never and could never like such stories.
