For a sin offering a common man was supposed to bring a "lamb without blemish" (Leviticus 4:32) to the temple, which is exactly what Christ was (John 1:29, 2 Corinthians 5:21)
By choosing to sacrifice himself, he acts as the sin offering for all of mankind, saving them forever (Hebrews 10:1-14).
