This is an over-simplification. Why? Because our Lord, particularly as He conducts His plan among the Israelites, shows He is a jealous God. And if you expect a perfectly loving, and perfectly powerful God, you need to remember a loving God is a jealous God. Just love has that component yet. Not in some inordinate way. But why be suprised God acts like a Lord. He is still omnipotent though, as opposed to that of the pagan conceptualization. And you can derive that from the Old Testament, even before the platonic Greek language used in the New.

Old testament - No forgiveness of sins so God can do whatever he wants to punish people.
New testament - Jesus is killed so now sins can be forgiven = God doesn't kill people anymore.
This is the big theme of the bible.
And I agree, the bible is actually a very "human" book.
