Though his analysis may be correct his solution is not. To go around collecting the sacred as if it is a product in a grocery defeats the entire purpose of the sacred. It becomes relative and simply a toy to be picked apart and played with. The solution is a new sacred for the modern man that is neither polytheism or monotheism.

I disagree with the idea that Melville is proposing that as a solution. The narrator is ironic. Its a wholesome satire of man's confrontations with the unknown, with organised religion, with a commercialized multiracial society. I think he depicts these things well. I don't think he proposed an earnest solution. In the end the only "solution" is to go whaling. It sounds like ya'll need to check your hypos in check.
