What are your thoughts on Kindles?
Considering getting the Paperwhite with the Amazon Prime Day deal.
I think I would find the portability of it really useful and would be great to be able to read in the dark.
Only thing is, I wouldn't truly be able to read anywhere and make use of that feature because i struggle if I'm in a loud environment. I can only read somewhere where its dead silent or there is a quiet white noise (like a fireplace or something, not a cafe or on a train because that's too loud).
But it also would be really nice to have every book I own in one spot and be able to pull it up to read if I'm on holiday somewhere and am reading in the hotel room before bed.
Do you think a Kindle would be worth it in my case or not?

I'm going to get the basic one around $80. Paperwhite doesn't sound like it adds enough to justify the price.

I read Lolita on my Kindle Paperwhite in the subway, and the best part is, nobody knows I'm reading Lolita.

I was looking at the two as well. The paperwhite has a larger screen (7" vs 6") and the lighting on it might be different. Otherwise the capacity really doesn't matter because at 16Gb you're going to hold far more books than you need at any given time. I had a paperwhite once, but broke the screen. I'd like to get a new one, but I'm not sure if I can justify these higher prices. I should probably look into the Kobo like >>24533966 said just to see how it compares. Also don't listen to any naysayers around here. An e-reader/Anna's Archive combination is literally the best set up a person could have for reading.

Basic one is unironically better because the paperwhite has this weird glossy screen while the basic looks and feels more like a book with its borders

I don't recall my paperwhite having a glossy screen, but whatever. I think I'm sold on the basic. Also I looked up the Kobos and they are all more expensive. I'm sure they're nice, but it's not like I'm needing anything more than a basic e-reader.

I recommend kindle's when there's a jailbreak available, but there isn't right now. So just put some 50 or 100 bucks more and get a Kobo, I like how the Clara BW looks. Once you try koreader you can't go back.

>>24534273
I wanted to buy a basic, but they weren't selling any used ones with old firmware to install koreader. I just got an used paperwhite 2024, it has a white pixel when you turn on the frontlight, seems like manufacturing defect people get even with new devices so whatever.

I bought a Kobo Clara BW at the tail end of last year and I'm pretty happy with it. I had a Nook for like 10 years before it died. Koreader is great also

Get one of the older models. I got a newer one and I hate it. It's not as intuitive and simple. Trying too hard to be a smartphone.

When you get it, make sure to turn on airplane mode so Amazon doesn't nuke your loaded books. Also I suggest the paperwhite bc it has a way nicer/larger display that also changes warmth, and it's waterproof unlike the basic. Battery size isn't really a concern for both (12 vs 6 weeks) but the paperwhite is larger. It is a pain to convert everything to .mubi, so a Kobo might be better since I heard it supports pdf (some books are only available in pdf so Calibre can't convert).

In a general sense, I read much faster on the Kindle compared to a regular book, even if the latter has a nicer somatic quality. This likely comes down to font size customization and removal of book weight. Aside from this, the cost of acquisition for a new book becomes $0; you could use your laptop/phone, but the e-ink display is much nicer for sustained reading.

My Nook Simple Touch was also 6" so i'm used to the size. Sometimes I just set it down like in the pic and can read just fine. It also fits quite comfortably in my hand so I can read while walking

Pros
>Free books
>Can read anywhere, anytime
>Can read faster due to text customization, add annotations, etc.

Cons
>Can't be performative and show off your book at a cafe in the middle of a workday

This is my current dilemma. Unironically.

I got the newest Paperwhite and I hate the size, it looks perfect I'm not gonna lie, I probably like reading in it more than in my old 6 inches ereader, but it kind of sucks to carry around. That extra inch is a real trade off.

huh, I didn't expect it to make that much of an impact
>Kobo: 112 x 160 x 9.2 mm
>Kindle: 174.2 x 124.6 x 8.1 mm
After checking the dimensions, I can see how that extra bit might make the difference. I wear my motorcycle jacket a lot and while my kobo fits fine in its pocket, the kindle might've not.
The only thing I think I would've preferred in the kindle is the flush screen

Some narrow-minded koboniggers can't comprehend that cheaper kindles can be just as functional, especially with Koreader. Being gullible tech illiterates they can't shake off the deeply rooted notion of Kindle = Amazon store.
Yes, I have a Kobo, libra2 btw. Highly recommend any reader with the same asymmetric design, much more comfortable to hold in one hand than a Paperwhite, and the weight distribution is nicer too.

>I can see how that extra bit might make the difference.
it's a 16% size increase, it's quite significant, you could round it to 120% zoom for the same content. For my math books, fitting the content to the display in 6 inches is a bit too tiny, so I adjust to width, and depending on the book, I rotate the screen.
With manga you don't have the landscape trick, the layout is not linear so fitting to width ruins the experience. So for non reflowable content, the 7 inch format is perfect, only it's not that portable.

They're weird, they believe they found some underground alternative like how linuxtards find anything that isn't Ubuntu superior. They can't comprehend, like you say, that you can do the same shit in the most popular option. They're just edgy and contrarian.
