The more I read, the more I realize that Joyce will never be surpassed.

Yeah I agree, he's the perfect writer with expert knowledge on countless subjects that he beautifully weaves into the story.

Not just subjects, but languages, as he proved in Finnegans Wake.

Joyce had a wife and kids, which is more than you'll ever have.

Nah. It's ultimately much more shallow than it first appears, you begin to realise that it is simply reference upon reference upon reference but lacking essence underneath the marvellous game he plays. His greatest achievement is simulating the psyche but again, what's the point in unfiltered garbage, we get that directly from ourselves? Still he was a literary genius.

His family fell apart. He died of sorrow from the insanity of his daughter (who his wife never got along with)
>>24534135
He’s the perfect stylist but he wasn’t profound. E Pound himself said he didn’t have much faith in Joyce’s intelligence (of course that’s relative, he mogs everyone here)
>>24534104 (OP)
He didn’t surpass Shakespeare or Dante or Tolstoy, whose work is far more profound than Joyce’s interior psychology

I read it in translation 4 times along additional reading material as well as several of the primary sources of his references before trying and tackling it in English
Dropped it by the time I got to aeolus. Don't bother

I thought he was diddling his daughter, which was the cause of her mental health decline?

ESLs can read his early works (Dubliners and the Portrait) easily enough.
The prose really becomes dense and challenging in certain chapters of Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake is beyond most English-speakers, never mind ESLs.

No, Beckett had a relation of some kind with her, she wanted to marry him but then he started avoiding her which began the crisis
A lot of Beckett’s depressionism must be attached to this, beyond original temperament. Not only are not as good as Joyce, your main influence, your master, but you were the immediate cause of his daughter’s madness; that would mess me up for sure
