>>24535128yes, that is interesting aspect of Gogol. Gogol wanted to be accepted by the russian aristocracy to some extent. When his most famous play The Government Inspector premiered and the aristocracy together with bureaucrats hated it he ran away from russia and experienced mental collapse, which lead to him burning Dead Souls and dying of starvation.
He wanted to be accepted by them, yet at the same time he saw how flawed they are. The feeling of being "other" is translated to his books, as his main characters usually are russian aristocrats or bureaucrats, yet do not fit in. His main characters also often hide who they really are or they real motives or they are considered to be someone other than they really are (both in The Government Inspector and in Dead Souls) - the disguise is often not intentional but imposed by the people around them through misunderstanding.
Gogol's otherness stemmed from him being ukrainian, from him being weirdo and from him being scared of women (possibly being a homo).
He found a friend and shelter with Pushkin, who is nowadays Russia's national poet. But Pushkin too was "other" as he was 1/4 ethiopean and he too never fit into the russian aristocracy.
