That's quite the бaзa, if I do say so myself. One quality I love about Tolstoy is that despite the finesse and beauty of his original Russian writing, it doesn't seem to lose much in translation. That is to say, the English translation of Ivan Ilyich I consulted for comparison (which one it was I don't remember) read almost as well as the original. I believe Schopenhauer has a similar quality, though I don't speak German, so I'm judging only by his Russian and English translations, both of which are exquisitely written as far as I'm concerned.

It's probably because he writes in such a clear and straightforward manner (Schopenhauer has the same refreshing quality). Makes them easy to translate.
