Howling Dark only gets better as it progresses and Demon in White is the closest to Red Rising that Sun Eater gets. Good pacing, strong intrigue, and huge action setpieces, and those elements more or less remain through the rest of the series.

aging isn't really an issue to me. they're supposed to be young in RR, then years older in Golden Son, another year older in Morning Star, and then like 33 in Iron Gold.

The civil war basically fell into Darrow's lap and the real players pretty much all killed each other, leaving Octavia, who had to employ the likes of fucking Roque to command the Core's greatest fleet because of the aftermath of said civil war.
