Lovecraft's heirs aren't ligotti or laird barron though
I don't know why people love comparing lovecraft and ligotti when they come from two very different (although similar on a first glance) traditions (gothic/weird anglo vs central european/slavic surrealism)

There really aren't any better choices. Ligotti is the heir apparent despite being rooted more in Kafkian hipster tradition. Barron is Ligotti for people who hate irony.

There aren't any, just like how there isn't any heirs to Tolkien.

You would have more luck looking for Howard's successors among videogame developers than authors. Same goes for Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Steven Erikson's writings have absolutely nothing in common with Robert E. Howard's.
