I've noticed that cultures more socially/emotionally reserved get extra freaky with their art. Look at places where the culture around emotions is much looser and their main cultural exports are generic mass-appeal stuff

Now, seriously, I guess it really depends on the level of freedom a society has to express itself. Western puritanism and wokism did a lot of damage to art, meanwhile the japanese have complete freedom to do anything they want.
