>>24536337 (OP)A lot of point and click games told pretty great stories. I still remember The Dig blowing my mind selling that alien civilization and its mysteries (mind you I was like 11).
I played a game recently called Old Skies that’s about time travel and changing the past and it was really effective telling a story many have tried to tell about changing the past and the many branching options of a lifetime. Woman protag + gay shit so if you’re very chuddy you now have a content warning. You guys are into those.
There used to be a thriving multiple choice story scene online like 2000-2010 or so. I think it all died off though. Maybe they went on to make VNs or something? It’s really just an extension of the old gamebooks which largely sucked but had a few standouts. The big thing back then was being able to play in a fantasy setting you liked so Middle Earth had a bunch (not sure how/if they were licensed). More swords and sandals type ones were also popular.
I know it’s a meme at this point but Disco Elysium did something very interesting with the fractured self approach that takes a page out of the stream of consciousness tradition and does something that to my mind is more interesting by making them compete with each other.
Silent Hill 2 is another good one but it seems like an accident or lightning in a bottle because none of the others come close.
