Don’t waste your SFF stories by posting them on 4chan or Wattpad. Send them to a literary magazine and get paid if accepted. The chances are slim (less than a percent), but you will be proud of yourself.

You do the math, but getting $500 for a short story you weren't going to publish traditionally isn't something to scoff at. Not to mention this is a good way to get started as an author.

I wonder if operating on the short end might net you less money, but increase chances to GET paid because everyone is trying to do the exact opposite by pushing the word limit. These magazines need bite-sized fillers as well.

Also, try submitting to smaller magazines. You have better odds of getting in (but probably won't get paid). I use The Submission Grinder to find good markets:
https://thegrinder.diabolicalplots.com/

I got three shorts and a poem accepted into various obscure online "magazines" last year. Feels good.
It would be cooler to get into a real magazine like Analog or something, but I'm not brave enough to try, then have my submission stuck in their review queue for six months only to get a form rejection.
At least the smaller magazines give you notes

>Diversity: We encourage writers from underrepresented or marginalized communities to submit their work. This includes, but is not limited to, writers who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, women, people with disabilities, and religious minorities. We recognize the potential for bias to affect our reading of submissions, so we also encourage writers from these communities to self-identify in their Notes For the Editors if they feel comfortable doing so–the contents of this box will only be visible to our Editor and Assistant Editors. This is completely optional and the omission of such information will not affect your submission.

Fuck em.
