recently people on here poop on stoic philosophy by saying it’s a philosophy just made to have the plebs content with their shitty place in life but isn’t this disproven by the fact that most stoic philosophers were rich people degrading themselves to a lower level? I mean Marcus the most famous of these guys was literally emperor. It wasn’t really made for the poor if the rich did it. A better critique of the philosophy would be that they didn’t really know how it was to be poor despite their philosophy being based on the fact it was preferred and easy to live in a shitty position because they didn’t actually have to deal with the real hardships of being poor like being forced to starve and such so it’s easy to say to suck it up. If anything they were just playing pretend. Even if they were the best of the best and truly degraded themselves to the lowest level just the fact they had the choice to be poor or rich or whatever put them in a subconsciously different position then the poor where you are absolutely forced to be in a stagnant position. The only stoic that was real was Epictetus because he was a slave earlier in his life
