The unconscious was a pretty big discovery to be fair though. Before that Christian proto-psychologies from the medieval period took for granted that consciousness, the soul, was entirely transparent to thought. Hell, the theological basis of confession laid in the assumption that the observance of sin through the conscious mind would absolve the sinner of its negative consequences. The whole ritual of confession doesn’t make any sense if there’s some sinful, selfish urge piggybacking off of your desire for salvation. Freud was also one of the first guys to put forward the idea that the mind was a mechanism governed by rules which are material and not spiritual. Childhood sexuality being his most scandalous example of his materialistic thinking on the construction of the mind. Most famously though he constructed a quite accurate picture of the bourgeois family psyche and its attendant neuroses which served as a playbook for most psychologists who came after him. Freud was foremost a clinician and secondarily a theoretician. His enduring fame comes from his students who basically used his clinical work as the 1800s DSM5.
