What really killed it was the psychological collapse of the modern individual. Around the time of Trump’s rise (2016), COVID (2020), and the exponential leap of AI (post-2022), people’s inner worlds became too fragmented, overstimulated, and crisis-ridden to sustain the kind of internal stillness minimalism requires.

Minimalism only works when there’s enough internal order to appreciate external simplicity.

in a world where it is no longer possible to cut out the noise, the only way to survive is by drowning it out with some more noise

Fashion is a pendulum. Minimalism was in until it wasn’t and now maximalism is in. They trick you into getting rid of perfectly good things by make you see it as ugly so they can sell you things that no one has anymore because they were branded ugly 10 years ago. As soon as a trend trickles down to the masses, the wealthy no longer want it. Minimalism went from “I’m so rich I can just buy anything instantly if I need it then get rid of it when I no longer need it” to “l’m trying to save money so I don’t buy anything” which is no longer aspirational. Once maximalism has been around for 10 years, we will have a wave of gen alpha embracing minimalism for the environmental and calming aspects. Tiktok will be full of people praising 2010s pictures of beige rented flats full of white ikea furniture.

I don't know, but I'm glad it's dead. There is something unnerving about things which are TOO orderly and empty.
