it's more impressive the less you know about literature of the time. i dislike it because it implies (or is commonly read as implying) that the medievals were more pious and humourless than they really were.

This was one of the biggest criticisms on Cervantes after he released the first volume: too many secondary stories that slow down the interesting plot of Don Quijote's followers. He actually took this in consideration to write volume 2.
