I genuinely think he's overhated, that he's onto something and there may be a lot of extremely good wisdom to extract from his teachings. Where to start?

You "think" he is overhated and then proceed to ask where to start. What kind of logic is this ? How can you tell the value of someone's philosophy without reading it ? Moreover on what base can you tell he is overhated ?
You may want to start to learn basic logic and argumentation before reading any philosophy.
Come back to /lit/ when you will be an actual reader

Pic related has a lecture on Diogenes in it as well as rebuttals from men who lived in his own time like Plato. Hegel generally has a negative view of Diogenes iirc. I’m rereading this awesome collection of lectures rn

Diogenes wore beggar’s clothes to show how humble he was and it is said there was a hole in them right at the crotch area whereat Plato remarked “Diogenes, I see your glory through the hole!” Ie his ‘glory’ but also his hubris in trying to make a show of how frugally he lived
