By all predictions literature was to be extinct twenty years ago. There is obviously something that can be touched with words and words that other modes cannot. Greatest of all writer has concept has lost none of his mystique and so still attracts pretenders.

It will survive the zoomer, but will it survive the ai?

By the time you finish your book, a million new AI books were added to Amazon

Probably. Hipsters revitalized vinyl with their weird fetishism. Now will any GOOD novels ever be written again? I highly doubt it. But the format will be fine. Just stick to stuff before they let the plebs have access to AI. Nothing after 2022. There's more than you could read in ten lifetimes there.

I don't think the 22 minute TV show will survive the Zoomers' intrinsic ADHD let alone Hollywood or even novels.
We're training future generations to think/keep up with computers; we're selecting for autism.

pic related is the best the zoomers can hope for with regards to /lit/ focus & comprehension (barring a miracle).
words are losing their artform and becoming sophisticated semiotic binary with words representing signs/tokens to the computer and to people. we're regressing back to human programming like with the me & nam shubs of Sumeria.
you want that art layer on language/communication.
it's human.
it's divine.

>sophisticated semiotic binary
and this is a weird metaphysical reductional worldview when you think about it: everything is constructed of 0s and 1s: a combination of quantum good & evil.
there's more to our ontological DNA than this but this is how computers will interpret metaphysics because it's discrete ontological quanta is 0s and 1s (the building blocks of the computer's worldview, not ours).

Novel as a bourgeois social institution is dead, or if not dead it should be dead... Pretty much all published books should be burned. But literature will likely continue. Most great writers are mainly appreciated by posterity

The novel hasn't survived WW2. All is decay. By 2100, when the bulk of the zoomers are dead and gone, even the word "novel" will have fallen into disuse. Long-form writing may continue, but it will be utterly divorced from the canon and the tradition of novel writing as we understand it today.

I'm very thankful for a John Barth quote: he started writing in the 50s, and later described those around him being confused, saying things like "why would you want to be a novelist? We have TV now."
It didn't stop him, it isn't stopping me, and it shouldn't stop you.

I'm an eighteen, almost nineteen year-old "Zoomer" American male, and I'm currently reading four books in my spare time. I have a deep vested interest in literature, writing, and various subjects that all involve reading in some major capacity. That said, so long as there are people like me who have a genuine drive to learn, to read, and even to write, the medium of the novel won't truly die out.

Just think about the literacy rates of previous centuries for a moment. The only angle I can understand here is connecting this to the worsening climate collapse. As long as there's a single person around, they can write some nice autofiction.

The novel is already largely dead. If this point, were it not for the industry running on the fumes conjured up by low brow fantasy science fiction and female coomer lit, it would be widely understood that the novel is a niche product for hobbyists.

its true, they also happened to be preferring older media (classic cinema, old music) compared to the newer ones; a little bit anachronistic from the surface, but if you actually knows why or learn the reason why, yjk that the method of retreating to older media is logical and reasonable in zoomer case, for the males at least

>superpositional state between 1 and 0
that's us. 1 being gods and 0 being man.
I think that describes our ontological state well and why it's so schizophrenic/confusing here for all us.
one minute reality is magical and the next it's mundane; it drives us insane.
